Renovation of a farmhouse in the hills: rural architecture with a contemporary language

The project involves the renovation of a two-level farmhouse with an annex dating back to before 1967, located in the picturesque hills of Bertinoro, Emilia-Romagna. The intervention preserved the original structure of the farmhouse while reinterpreting it with a contemporary architectural language that dialogues with the historical and rural identity of the territory.

The goal was to enhance the value of Romagna vernacular architecture through a respectful approach that maintained the original building typology while introducing contemporary elements. The compact volume of the house was retained, while the façades were redesigned to prioritize views of the surrounding landscape: large arched openings on the ground floor create a direct connection with the private garden, ensuring natural light and a strong visual link to the outdoors.

Spread over two floors, the building house collective living spaces on the ground floor – living room, kitchen, and service bathroom – while the first floor accommodates the sleeping area with four bedrooms, each with a private bathroom, achieving a balance between functionality and residential comfort.

The material character of the building plays on a refined contrast between tradition and innovation: rough, authentic stone walls interact with the precise metal surfaces of the window frames, enhanced by a special bronze finish, adding warmth and contemporary appeal to the entire intervention.

The result is a sustainable architecture integrated into its context, which reinterprets the rural farmhouse in a contemporary way while maintaining a strong connection with the rolling Emiliano hills. Particularly striking is the south-facing façade, where a large arched opening frames the surrounding hills, transforming the landscape into an active architectural element.
